My backpacking trip began in Chengdu, where I boarded a green-skin train heading for Yining City in Xinjiang. My journey was set to start from there. Yining City, a small city located at the border of China and Kazakhstan, is renowned for its rich ethnic culture and historical relics. My exploration began in the narrow streets of the old city, where I witnessed the blend of the city’s ancient and modern elements.

Before setting off, I packed essential items in my backpack: a map, water bottle, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera. To better integrate with the local environment, I also researched some local customs, hoping to communicate better with the locals during my travels. Upon arriving in Yining City, I was first drawn to the diverse cultural atmosphere. In the city, residents from various ethnic groups such as Han, Uighur, and Kazakh coexist harmoniously, with each culture naturally merging within this city.

In Yining City:

The old city area of Yining is the most historically rich part, with narrow streets lined with traditional Uighur architecture. The intricate wood carvings on the buildings are so exquisite that they invite passersby to pause and admire. As my friends and I wandered these streets, we occasionally passed through small alleys, where the scenes of daily life were particularly vivid: children playing, adults gathering to chat, and stalls brimming with various goods, mostly handicrafts and local specialties.

During my exploration of the old city area in Yining, we coincidentally walked into the atmosphere of the Kurban Festival, a very important holiday for the local Muslim community. The festive atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy, with streets lined with stalls selling festival foods and souvenirs. As we curiously observed, an elderly Uighur man noticed us outsiders. He fluently introduced the meaning of the festival in Chinese and warmly invited us into his home to join their celebration. We were both excited and a bit nervous. His home in a quiet alley of the old city, a traditional Uighur house, was impressively welcoming. The decorations inside were rich in ethnic characteristics, with hand-woven carpets and various exquisite ornaments on the walls. Each item in the house revealed a rich history and cultural story.

The old man’s family was very friendly, greeting us with traditional fragrant tea and pastries. Soon after, the host served us festive specialties—roasted lamb and a variety of fresh vegetable salads. The roasted lamb was aromatic and golden, meticulously prepared with special spices and local seasonings. As we sat together eating and chatting, the old man and his family introduced us more about the traditions of the Kurban Festival and their family customs. This visit was not just a feast for the taste buds but also a cultural and spiritual exchange. I deeply felt the locals’ warm hospitality and their zest for life. The festive atmosphere brought our hearts closer together, transcending cultural and language barriers. This experience of the Kurban Festival not only deepened our understanding of Yining City but also allowed us to experience genuine cultural integration and human interaction. When we left, we carried with us immense gratitude and new friendships, filling our hearts with deep affection for this land and its people. This was a truly exploratory journey that enriched and elevated our spirits.

Additionally, we paid special attention to the local cuisine. In a small restaurant, my friends from the youth hostel and I went out specifically to try authentic kebabs and pilaf, a traditional dish made with lamb, carrots, and rice, which was incredibly delicious. After the meal, the restaurant owner enthusiastically shared more stories about Yining, giving us a deeper understanding of the city.

I stayed in Yining City for a full two weeks, making it my base for trips to other places and returning there because I could find a lot of different cuisines, which is particularly important for someone who loves to eat as I do. In exploring the old city area, I not only witnessed the diversity of cultures but also felt the depth of history. These experiences made me reflect a lot on the meaning of travel—it is not just about sightseeing but also about touching and growing the soul. I recorded these insights in my notebook and took many photos, hoping to preserve every moment of this experience.

 Nalati Grassland

My journey to the Nalati Grassland started from Yining City. Early in the morning, I packed my bag and took an early bus towards this mysterious grassland. It was a journey with my heart set on the horizon, filled with anticipation and excitement.

During the preparation phase, I made sure to check that my backpack had all the essentials: a waterproof jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and the necessary camera, along with enough food and water. For this trip to the grassland, I also downloaded some information about Nalati’s geography and cultural background, hoping to gain a deeper understanding and experience of this land. The drive from Yining City to Nalati Grassland took several hours, passing through continuous mountains and flowing rivers. As we gradually gained altitude, the scenery around us opened up. From the bus window, the first glimpses of the grassland unfolded, with greenery stretching to the horizon and flocks of sheep and horses grazing leisurely.

When I arrived at Nalati Grassland, it was a sunny afternoon. I got off the bus and took a deep breath of fresh air, feeling the natural atmosphere different from the city. The breeze on the grassland brushed my face, bringing a hint of coolness. I decided to take a walk along a path for exploration, with wildflowers swaying in the wind and butterflies and bees busy among the flowers.

During my walk, I met several local Kazakh herders who were herding. One herder, seeing my interest in their way of life, invited me into their yurt to experience their daily life. The yurt was simply yet warmly decorated, with family photos and traditional ornaments hanging on the walls. The herder’s family warmly offered me homemade kumis and dried horse meat, the unique flavors of which left a deep impression on me.

As the sun set, I began my return journey to Yining City. Sitting on the bus back, I reflected on the day’s experiences, each scene touching me deeply. The beautiful scenery of Nalati Grassland, the warm hospitality of the herders, and the exhilarating horseback riding—all these experiences came together to form an unforgettable journey, giving me a deeper understanding and affection for this ancient land.

As dusk fell, I left the old city with a promise to myself to return to Yining and continue exploring this enchanting land. This trip not only allowed me to appreciate the historical beauty of Yining but also made me profoundly aware of the true value of travel—exploring the unknown, understanding different cultures, and building deeper connections with every corner of the world.

Sailimu Lake

The next morning, I took a local bus from the center of Yining City to Sailimu Lake. The drive took about two hours. Along the winding mountain roads, with rolling mountains and green grasslands on either side, the scenery was breathtaking.

Upon arrival at Sailimu Lake, the first thing that struck me was the vast expanse of the lake, its waters shimmering under the sunlight like a giant mirror. I found a good spot by the lake, set down my backpack, and prepared to start my lakeside hiking adventure. Sailimu Lake has an excellent hiking path that allows people to get close to the water and experience this tranquility and beauty. I followed the path, enjoying the surrounding scenery as I walked. Lakeside wildflowers swayed in the breeze, and occasionally, some wildlife played by the lake. I found a quiet spot, sat down, and enjoyed the lunch I brought. Facing the lake, eating a simple packed lunch and fruit, I felt the entire world quiet down. This moment of tranquility filled my thoughts, and I recorded this feeling and the surrounding natural beauty.

As I walked by the lake, I continually used my camera to capture the beautiful scenes. Each view was unique, from the sparkling waves on the lake to the majestic mountains in the distance. As the sun gradually set, I sat by the lake, marveling at how the power of nature always inspires awe, and the tranquility and beauty of Sailimu Lake gave me new insights into life. Tomorrow, I would set out with two friends on the road out of Xinjiang, passing many beautiful landscapes along the way.

Qiaxi Scenic Area, Yizhao Road, Duku Road

After resting for several days in Yining, we headed to the Qiaxi Scenic Area located deep in the Tian Shan mountains, a natural reserve that encompasses canyons, forests, grasslands, and lakes. I set out early for Qiaxi, the sky a clear blue, adding a sense of anticipation to this adventure. Upon entering the scenic area, the first thing that caught my eye was the rolling mountains and dense primeval forests.

After leaving the Qiaxi Scenic Area, we drove along the Yizhao Highway. The Yizhao Highway connects Yining City with Zhao Su County, offering beautiful scenery throughout and known as the “Green Corridor under the Tian Shan.” Along the way, the roadside was lush with grass and towering Tian Shan mountains, making us stop frequently to take photos. Driving on such a road, every turn could bring a new surprise. Along the way, there were also herders’ tents, revealing the deep pastoral culture of this land. I stopped at a viewpoint and talked with a few local herders, who shared stories about the natural environment of the Tian Shan, adding many cultural highlights to my trip. After getting off the car, we walked along a country path into the rapeseed fields. The sight before me was stunning: endless waves of rapeseed flowers gently swaying in the wind. The sunlight filtered through the clouds, casting golden light over the flower sea, making each rapeseed blossom shine.

We stopped at a secluded path that led deep into the flower sea, far from the crowds and noise, with only the scent of flowers and birdsong. I found a relatively quiet area, set down my backpack, and took out my camera to capture this rare beauty. With each photo I took, I took a deep breath, allowing myself to fully immerse in nature.

After a night’s rest, I began the most anticipated part of the trip—the exploration of the Duku Highway. The Duku Highway is known as one of China’s most beautiful roads, traversing spectacular canyons and vast grasslands, connecting Dushanzi and Kuqa. The beauty of this road lies not only in its natural scenery but also in its challenge. The road conditions vary, sometimes steep mountain roads, sometimes wide valleys, and for safety reasons, it is only open during specific seasons of the year. We drove carefully, enjoying every moment of the scenery. Especially when crossing a long stretch of high mountain meadows, the surrounding mountain flowers were in full bloom, almost like a fairyland. At the end of this road, we officially left the territory of Xinjiang.
