Backpacking in Yunnan Province is an immersive cultural and natural experience, renowned for its rich ethnic diversity, spectacular landscapes, and historical sites. From the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake in Dali to the ancient city of Lijiang, the sea of flowers in Luoping, the terraced fields in Yuanyang, and finally the ancient architecture in Jianshui and the tropical rainforests of Xishuangbanna, each place provided me with unique experiences and profound memories.
Dali 大理
我的徒步之旅开始于苍山。我早晨从大理古城出发，目的地是位于苍山中腹的一个观景台。途中，我穿过了几个白族村落，村民们的热情好客给了我不少帮助和指引。沿着被古树环绕的小径行走，清新的空气和鸟鸣声伴随着我的每一步。苍山不仅风景秀丽，而且途中的各种植被和小动物也让我的徒步之旅充满了惊喜和发现。到达观景台后，眼前展开的洱海全景和大理城的壮丽景象令我赞叹不已，所有的劳累在这一刻都得到了回报。
My hiking journey began in the Cangshan Mountains. I set off in the morning from Dali’s ancient town, heading towards a viewing platform located midway up the mountain. Along the way, I passed through several Bai ethnic villages, where the villagers’ hospitality provided much guidance and assistance. Walking along paths surrounded by ancient trees, the fresh air and birdsong accompanied every step. The Cangshan Mountains are not only scenically beautiful, but the variety of vegetation and small animals along the way also filled my hike with surprises and discoveries. Reaching the viewing platform, the panoramic view of Erhai Lake and the magnificent scenery of Dali city took my breath away, making all the exertion worthwhile.
骑行则是在洱海周围进行的。我在大理租了一辆电动车，计划环湖一周。洱海的湖边有一条专门的自行车道，非常适合骑行。一路上，我可以停下来随时欣赏湖光山色，拍摄洱海边的风景。湖边的芦苇荡、远处苍山的倒影、以及湖面上偶尔划过的渔船，构成了一幅幅美丽的画卷。骑行让我能够以一种轻松的方式深入感受大理的自然美，同时也是一种身体和心灵上的释放。
Cycling was around Erhai Lake. I rented an electric bike in Dali with plans to circle the lake. There’s a dedicated bike path along the lake, ideal for cycling. Along the way, I could stop at any time to admire the scenery and take pictures of the lake’s surroundings. The lakeside reeds, the reflection of Cangshan in the distance, and the occasional fishing boat on the lake composed a series of beautiful pictures. Cycling allowed me to deeply feel the natural beauty of Dali in a relaxed manner, and it was also a release both physically and spiritually.
Lijiang 丽江

In Lijiang, I was immersed in the enchanting charm of this ancient city while also planning a trip to the awe-inspiring Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. This snow mountain is one of Lijiang’s iconic landscapes, and its magnificent scenery and unique Naxi cultural background made this trip highly anticipated. I started my journey from a cozy inn in Lijiang’s ancient town, where the innkeeper gave me plenty of useful advice and prepared me for this high-altitude hike. The weather on the snow mountain is unpredictable, so I specially prepared warm clothing and necessary mountain gear.

Early in the morning, I joined a small group, and we took a vehicle arranged by a travel agency to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. As we drove, the scenery gradually changed from the hustle and bustle of Lijiang’s ancient town to the tranquil nature of the outskirts. Upon reaching the base of the snow mountain, the fresh air and the majestic peaks in front of us were awe-inspiring. We took the cable car from the Spruce Meadow station up the mountain, and as the cable car slowly ascended, the scenery below gradually shrank, while the entire Lijiang basin’s beautiful scenery unfolded beneath us.

At the viewing platform of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, I was deeply captivated by the spectacular view in front of me. The mountain peak is covered with snow all year round, glistening under the sunlight. Our group began a short hike under the guidance of our tour guide, who explained in detail the geological structure of the snow mountain, the ecological environment, and the historical connection between the Naxi people and this mountain. During the hike, we were fortunate to observe some of the unique high-altitude plants and occasionally spot wildlife, making this hiking trip even more memorable.

Back in Lijiang, I rested in a tea house in the ancient town, reflecting on the experiences of the snow mountain trip. On the way back to my accommodation, I got lost in the small alleys of Lijiang’s ancient town, which led me to discover many hidden gourmet foods and handicraft shops. In a small cafe, I met an elderly artisan making traditional Naxi Dongba script symbols. He noticed my keen interest and initiated a conversation, then shared stories about Naxi culture and the Dongba religion for a long time.
Luoping 罗平
罗平的旅行对我来说是一场追求视觉艺术的冒险。这里以壮观的花海而闻名，尤其是每年春天的油菜花盛开季节，成为了摄影爱好者和自然爱好者的天堂。我带着我的相机和旅行装备来到这片花的海洋，寻找能够捕捉到这壮观场景的最佳地点。
The trip to Luoping was an adventure in pursuit of visual art. Known for its spectacular sea of flowers, especially during the spring bloom of rapeseed flowers, it has become a paradise for photographers and nature lovers. I brought my camera and travel gear to this sea of flowers, searching for the best spots to capture this spectacular scene.
到达罗平后，我首先去了当地的旅游信息中心，那里的工作人员向我推荐了几个观赏和拍摄油菜花的最佳地点。他们提供了地图和一些有用的本地提示，比如何时是一天中光线最理想的时间，以及如何避开人流高峰期。我根据他们的建议制定了我的拍摄计划，准备在接下来的几天里捕捉这片花海的各种美态。
Upon arriving in Luoping, I first visited the local tourist information center, where the staff recommended several prime viewing and photography spots for the rapeseed flowers. They provided maps and useful local tips, such as the best times of day for ideal lighting and how to avoid peak crowd times. Based on their advice, I made my photography plan, ready to capture the various beautiful aspects of the flower sea in the coming days.

The next early morning, I drove to Jinji Peak, one of Luoping’s most famous photography spots. Jinji Peak is located in the center of a vast rapeseed flower field, and reaching the peak offers a spectacular view of the entire flower field. Climbing to the peak required some effort, but once I stood at the summit and saw the endless golden sea of flowers, all fatigue vanished. I spent several hours there, capturing the beautiful scenes of the rapeseed flowers changing with the sunlight from sunrise to sunset.

During my stay in Luoping, I also visited a few lesser-known photography spots, such as Yangjie Town and Dawoshan. These places are not as famous as Jinji Peak, but they offer more tranquil and undisturbed natural landscapes. In Yangjie Town, I interacted with local farmers, learning about their lifestyles, and under their guidance, I found some very unique perspectives for photographing the flower sea. My photography journey in Luoping reached its climax. Every photo captured a unique moment of the spectacular flower sea, witnessing my efforts and passion in the journey of finding and creating beauty. The flower sea of Luoping is not only a scenery under my lens but has also become an eternal picture in my heart. Through this experience, I not only improved my photography skills but also deeply appreciated the importance of harmonious coexistence with nature.
Yuanyang Rice Terraces 元阳梯田
在元阳梯田，光照射下的梯田如同镶嵌在群山之间的镜子，反射出绚丽的光芒。在这里，我入住了一家位于山顶的青年旅社，可以直接俯瞰这片壮阔的景色。在旅社中，我遇到了来自世界各地的背包客，我们在露台上分享各自的旅行故事，互相交流摄影技巧。有一位摄影师向我展示了他拍摄日出的照片，那瞬间的光影和色彩让我深受启发。这种在旅途中与志同道合的人相遇，共同欣赏和记录自然之美，是背包旅行中最珍贵的部分。
In Yuanyang Rice Terraces, the sunlight reflecting off the terraces was like mirrors set between the mountains, casting dazzling light. Here, I stayed in a youth hostel located at the mountain’s summit, directly overlooking this vast landscape. In the hostel, I met backpackers from around the world; we shared our travel stories on the terrace and exchanged photography tips. A photographer showed me his photos of the sunrise, the momentary light and color deeply inspiring me. This encounter, meeting like-minded individuals on the road, and appreciating and documenting natural beauty together, is the most precious part of backpacking.
Jianshui 建水

From Yuanyang, I traveled to Jianshui, a small town preserving many ancient buildings and cultural heritages. Jianshui is famous for its ancient residences and purple pottery. I visited several local purple pottery studios, witnessing the production process of this ancient craft. In an old tea house in Jianshui, I tasted authentic Yunnan Pu’er tea, chatting with the tea house owner and other tea patrons. From their conversations, I felt the profound historical heritage and leisurely life of this city.

Jianshui is renowned for its rich history and well-preserved traditional buildings. The town’s history is profound, reflecting the diverse architectural styles and historical changes of Yunnan. My exploration of Jianshui began at Zhu Family Garden, a typical Qing Dynasty residence known for its exquisite architecture and beautiful garden design.

Walking along the paths of the Zhu Family Garden, I was captivated by the complex layout and fine decorations. Each building in the garden tells stories of the past; the small bridges, flowing water, and exquisite pavilions seemingly transported me back in time, experiencing the tranquility and elegance of that era. One evening, I went out to enjoy some local grilled tofu with two friends I had met on the road from Chongqing and Shanghai.

Next, I visited Jianshui Ancient Town, where the narrow and winding streets are flanked by red stone walls and old tile houses. I particularly enjoyed wandering these old streets, feeling the authentic pace of life in Jianshui. In a small alley, I stumbled upon a workshop making traditional purple pottery. Purple pottery is a traditional handicraft of Jianshui, known for its unique material and aesthetic value. I watched the entire process of purple pottery making, from clay shaping to final firing. Each step reflected the artisans’ exquisite skills and infinite patience. During my days in Jianshui, I also tasted local specialties such as Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles and fermented tofu. Especially in an old tea house, I tried local Pu’er tea, chatting with the elderly patrons who shared many stories about Jianshui’s history and culture. These exchanges gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation of Jianshui.

Mengzi 蒙自
之后，我前往了蒙自，在碧色寨访问滇越铁路是我云南之行中最具历史意义的体验之一。这座城市不仅因其文化多样性而闻名，还因为它在滇越铁路历史中的重要地位而备受瞩目。抵达蒙自后，我首先参观了蒙自火车站，这是滇越铁路的一个重要车站。火车站虽然已经历了多年的风雨，但仍保持着早期的建筑风格，站台上陈列着一些老式的蒸汽机车和车厢，让人仿佛回到了百年前铁路刚建成时的情景。
Afterward, I headed to Mengzi, and visiting the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway at Bisezhai was one of the most historically significant experiences of my trip to Yunnan. This city is not only famous for its cultural diversity but also for its pivotal role in the history of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Upon arriving in Mengzi, my first stop was the Mengzi Railway Station, an important station on the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. Despite many years of exposure to the elements, the station still retains its early architectural style, with old steam locomotives and carriages displayed on the platform, making it feel as if one has stepped back into the scene when the railway was first constructed a century ago.

The museum houses a large collection of historical documents, photographs, and artifacts related to the railway, detailing its construction process, engineering techniques, and the social life along the route. Through the explanations provided by the guide, I learned about the formidable challenges faced during the railway’s construction, including how workers overcame harsh natural environments and technical conditions to complete what seemed like an impossible task. Additionally, I walked along parts of the old railway line, experiencing the natural scenery and historical relics along the way. Although parts of the railway are no longer in use, they still quietly narrate the glory of the past and the silence of today. Every step along the way was a profound encounter with history, deepening my understanding of the significance of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway and its historical importance to both China and Vietnam.

This visit not only enriched my travel experience but also deepened my historical perspective.
Xishuangbanna 西双版纳
